HIPPIES
Guide to an American Subculture
Hippies was the first of two books I wrote for Greenwood Press’ series on American subcultures and countercultures. This book serves as both an introductory history to hippie culture and a basic sociological text, introducing readers to a variety of subjects germane to the study of group dynamics and “deviant” behavior.
Research for hippies was conducted in Philadelphia and San Francisco, using interviews, archived media and a variety of modern academic sources in an effort to craft a look at hippies that rides the line between scholarly exploration and introductory field guide.
In addition to history, Hippies contains chapters on music, sex, rock and roll and politics as well as a modern account of how hippies influenced the culture of the 21st century. The book closes with appendices providing biographies of key figures in hippie history and original documents written by and about hippies that give a taste of sixties counterculture in its own terms.
