GOTHS
Guide to an American Subculture
Goths was my second book for Greenwood Press on the history and influence of subcultures in America. Goth culture developed out of the music scene of the late 70s and early 80s and, by the 1990s, has spread across the world. This book attempts to trace the origins of goth, looking not only at the modern musical culture, but also at the underlying aesthetic that reaches into antiquity.
Doing research for Goths involved engaging in dozens of interviews both with goths currently involved in the scene as well as with scholars and other specialists who study goth culture from other perspectives. In addition, scholarly books, research papers and a variety of non-traditional literature were used to gain a better understanding of goth history and lifestyle.
While this book provides a brief historical overview, much of the content is devoted to deeper analyses of goth music, fashion, art and community. Interviews with prominent goths, sociological researchers and a variety of goths still deeply involved in the modern manifestation of the culture help to provide a contemporary angle on a culture that is both alive and undead.
